BRICS Summit Evaluates Unity Amid Energy Crisis and Conflict in the Middle East

The BRICS summit in New Delhi is marked by intense divisions among emerging economic powers, particularly driven by the severe energy crises and geopolitical tensions stemming from conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Key discussions focus on Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy corridor, which has led to a significant spike in oil prices above $100 per barrel.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s attendance is notable, as it is his first visit to India since a military standoff in 2019, pointing towards a thaw in relations between China and India despite lingering mistrust over border disputes. Tibetans protested against Xi’s visit, reflecting ongoing tensions related to China’s policies.

The summit highlights deep-seated rifts within BRICS, as Russia and China maintain trade relations with Iran under U.S. sanctions, while the UAE has distanced itself due to Iranian missile strikes. Analysts suggest that these conflicts will be key points of division during the summit.

High-level meetings, including those between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders such as Vladimir Putin, indicate attempts to forge new alliances independent of Western influence, but these efforts reveal a lack of cohesive strategy within BRICS. Each nation appears focused on safeguarding its own energy security and regional interests, raising questions about the future unity of the bloc amidst external pressures.
