Rockstar Discusses GTA 6’s Incorporation of Real-Life Events

Rob Nelson, the Head of Development at Rockstar Games, recently discussed the lengthy development process for Grand Theft Auto 6, which has been in progress since 2015. The highly anticipated game is set to release on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version to follow later.

In interviews, Nelson explained that the game’s long development cycle makes it challenging to incorporate topical stories from real life. He emphasized the risks of including current events or trends, as they could feel outdated by the game’s release.

Nelson stated, “We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there…by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, whatever it is—it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated.” He highlighted the importance of selecting story elements that will endure over time, noting the ongoing potential for satire in the absurdities of modern life.

With the game’s release approaching, excitement is building, particularly with the announcement of a limited-edition controller from PlayStation to celebrate the launch.
