Dominion Energy to Lower Lake Murray Water Levels This Fall
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Dominion Energy is set to start lowering the water level of Lake Murray this fall, collaborating with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services.
Dam operators will start the drawdown this month, aiming to reach an elevation of approximately 350 feet by December. This target level is expected to be maintained until late January 2027.
Purpose of the Drawdown
The primary reason for lowering the lake is to control aquatic vegetation and enhance water quality. Certain species of aquatic plants thrive in shallow areas and can obstruct boat propellers. By lowering the water level, these plants will be exposed to dry conditions and freezing temperatures, helping to mitigate their growth.
Iris Griffin, Dominion Energy South Carolina’s vice president of power generation, noted that this process occurs every few years to curb the unchecked growth of aquatic vegetation, which can negatively impact water quality and recreational activities. The drawdown also provides lake residents and businesses an opportunity to perform maintenance and repairs on docks and shorelines.
Caution for Boaters
Boaters are advised to exercise caution as many coves and inlets will be shallower than usual during this time. Lake Murray is expected to return to its regular summer elevation of 358 feet by late spring 2027, depending on rainfall and river flows.
