The City of Boise is moving forward with designating five areas as Opportunity Zones, pending approval from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Governor Brad Little and the Idaho Department of Commerce have recommended these zones, which aim to attract private investment to support community development through federal tax benefits.
The nominated areas include Downtown Boise, Shoreline, the University District, South Boise Village, and West Boise. The selection was based on a mix of data analysis, community feedback, and ongoing planning efforts. City officials considered factors like economic conditions, infrastructure accessibility, and existing development plans when making their choices.
If approved, the opportunity zones would take effect on January 1, 2027, and remain for ten years. Mayor Lauren McLean emphasized that this initiative could help spur residential and commercial growth, leading to job creation and development in the community. The city plans to keep residents informed as the federal review process continues.
