WWE’s Partnership with Netflix: Two Years in Review
This January marks two years since WWE launched its programming on Netflix. Gabe Spitzer, Netflix’s VP of Global Live Sports and Entertainment, recently discussed the ongoing partnership in an interview with Richard Deitsch on the Sports Media podcast.
In January 2024, WWE and Netflix entered a monumental ten-year agreement valued at $5 billion, enhancing WWE’s reach on the platform. Spitzer commented on the first eighteen months, highlighting that WWE’s flagship show, Raw, streams exclusively in the U.S., while Netflix broadcasts WWE content worldwide.
“They’ve been great partners, and we’re thrilled with the results so far… outside of the U.S., we’re the home for all of WWE,” said Spitzer.
Notably, discussions about content guidelines arose, particularly concerning muted swearing and pixelation in segments. While Netflix adheres to ratings standards, Spitzer noted that they strive for flexibility, allowing more creative freedoms in certain areas.
“There have been examples where… they’ve done big match promotions in a timely manner, and they’ve been very receptive to that,” he added.
Additionally, WWE talent has started appearing in Netflix’s broader sports initiatives—Seth Rollins, for instance, is set to feature in the Christmas Day broadcast of the Green Bay Packers versus the Chicago Bears. There’s also collaboration between WWE and Netflix’s scripted teams for potential casting opportunities.
The partnership seems poised for growth, especially internationally, where WWE’s presence continues to expand.
