Mark Cerny and Geoff Keighley unveil the ‘Nova Games Foundation’

Nova Games Foundation: A New Initiative to Support Aspiring Game Developers

Recently, industry stalwarts Mark Cerny and Geoff Keighley announced the launch of the Nova Games Foundation. As the video game industry grapples with numerous challenges, including job layoffs and financial uncertainties, this initiative aims to support emerging talent to foster innovation and creativity.

About the Nova Games Foundation

In an interview with Game File, Cerny and Keighley described the Nova Games Foundation as a “university-affiliated fellowship program.” The foundation plans to provide grants of at least $100,000 each to 20 young game designers annually, emphasizing “no-strings-attached funding” and mentorship opportunities from industry leaders.

Strategic Partnerships

Currently, the Nova Games Foundation has partnered with 13 universities across 8 countries, including institutions in Scotland, France, Germany, and Australia. This international collaboration underscores the global commitment to nurturing the next generation of game developers.

Insights from Founders

Keighley expressed his long-standing desire to give back without commercial interests, stating: “Nova is philanthropy: we aren’t taking equity or looking to recoup the grants. The return we’re hoping for is creative—helping new voices make games and find their footing.” Cerny echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his desire to pay it forward as he nears the end of his career.

Community Engagement

The gaming community is encouraged to share thoughts on this philanthropic effort. Some questions to consider: Is philanthropy the right answer for the industry’s challenges, or are there deeper issues that need addressing?
