EU aims to bolster ties with Greenland through a commitment to a new partnership and investment.

EU Supports Greenland Amid Trump’s Threats

The European Union (EU) is strengthening its relationship with Greenland in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to take control of the island. During a visit to Nuuk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a commitment of 200 million euros (approximately $232 million) over the next two years for various initiatives, including tackling climate change, enhancing internet connectivity, and improving hydropower, fisheries, and education.

Concerns over sovereignty were heightened by Trump’s insistence on U.S. control for security reasons, leading to backlash from Greenlandic and Danish leaders. Von der Leyen emphasized that Greenland’s future decisions lie with its people and Denmark, stating, “Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law.”

The EU’s investment also aims to boost housing, support small businesses, and promote sustainable tourism, with plans to double its budget support to Greenland to around 500 million euros ($580 million) by 2028.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen praised the EU as a “loyal and trusted friend,” expressing gratitude for their ongoing support amid challenges. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the pressure from the Trump administration, highlighting the importance of European solidarity.

In January, NATO members, including Denmark and seven European allies, sent troops to Greenland for military exercises focused on Arctic security, signaling support for the island’s sovereignty. Trump’s later threats of tariffs on these countries were met with condemnation, but he eventually relented as NATO decided to increase security in the Arctic.

Von der Leyen’s visit coincides with military exercises involving 11 NATO countries in Greenland, underscoring the region’s strategic importance.
