Dwayne Johnson’s Upcoming Dramatic Role in Free Byrd
Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson is set to take on a powerful new role in the film Free Byrd, written and directed by Greg Kwedar. The movie centers around a motorcycle stuntman who struggles with a dementia diagnosis.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Johnson expressed his gratitude for landing the role. He shared a screenshot of a Variety article announcing the project and reflected on the emotional weight of the story. He wrote, “How deeply soul stirring, and heart aching this disease is as it grips so many of us… It’s our most profound test of grace, to watch our loved one slip away.”
About the Film
The film will feature Johnson as a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman attempting to conceal his dementia from those around him. Kwedar is revising Jon Boyer’s original screenplay, having previously directed the critically acclaimed Sing Sing, which earned three nominations at the 97th Academy Awards. Free Byrd will also be produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s company, Artists Equity.
Johnson expressed his excitement about collaborating with Kwedar, stating that their journey together has been life-changing. He thanked Affleck, Damon, and Artists Equity for their support, emphasizing their commitment to the project and its sensitive subject matter.

Upon the project’s announcement in July, Affleck and Damon expressed their personal connections to the story. They praised Kwedar and Johnson, saying, “We are extremely excited that they have chosen to make this with us and look forward to sharing the finished film with audiences.”

While Johnson is renowned for his blockbuster hits like Jumanji and the Fast and Furious franchise, he has also ventured into dramatic roles. His performance in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine earned him critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Actor at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. Johnson is also set to work with Safdie again in the upcoming fantasy adventure Lizard Music, alongside a talented cast that includes Alicia Silverstone and Regina Hall.
