Duke Energy’s self-healing grid technology has made significant strides in improving power reliability for customers in New Hanover County, avoiding approximately 19,000 outages this year alone. This system automatically detects outages and reroutes electricity, minimizing service disruption and restoring power more swiftly.
So far in 2026, the technology has saved customers an estimated 31,000 hours of outage time, with a notable impact during the summer, when nearly 10,000 outages were prevented. This innovation can reduce the number of affected customers by 75% and sometimes restore service in under a minute.
The company emphasizes that last year, the tech helped avoid over 26,000 outages, saving close to 50,000 hours in total outages. Currently, around 80% of Duke Energy’s customers in North Carolina are benefiting from this self-healing technology, a notable increase from the previous year.
These advancements are part of Duke Energy’s broader efforts to enhance grid reliability and resilience, including replacing over 150,000 utility poles and upgrading infrastructure. The company continues to expand this technology across the state, demonstrating its commitment to improving service for its customers.
