Complimentary Pet Boarding Services Offered for Veterans in Hot Springs

The Battle Mountain Humane Society in Hot Springs, S.D., has opened a new facility that offers free boarding for veterans’ pets during their inpatient care at the local VA hospital. Board member Connie Geiser emphasized the importance of this service, noting that many veterans struggle to afford pet boarding.

With Hot Springs being a central hub for veterans, the demand for such services is significant. Since its opening about six weeks ago, the facility has accommodated approximately nine veterans’ dogs. Studies indicate that interactions with animals can significantly help veterans, with a Purdue University study showing a 42% reduction in PTSD symptoms for those paired with dogs.

Operating as a nonprofit, the Battle Mountain Humane Society relies on community support to maintain this initiative. Donations can be made specifically for the veterans’ building via their website.
