Labor Day Travel: A Busy Weekend on the Roads
Jackson, Tenn. (WBBJ) – It’s clear that many took to the highways this Labor Day weekend, with travel peaking from Thursday through Monday as people aimed to beat the hefty holiday traffic.
One traveler noted that “people already started traveling Thursday or Friday,” leading to busier roads on Monday as families returned home.
Rising Fuel Costs
This year, road trips came with a higher cost due to rising gas prices. According to AAA, the average price of gas on Labor Day 2025 was around $3.19 per gallon, while this year it has risen to approximately $4.00 per gallon. Despite the increase, many travelers expressed that paying a premium for gas is worth it to spend time with loved ones.
Quality Family Time
Kimberly Barham, another traveler, shared her thoughts: “We usually stay around the house and enjoy our day off… It’s always fun to see family you haven’t seen in a while.”
However, this year’s trips are hitting wallets harder; AAA reports domestic hotel bookings are up by 9%, with average plane tickets to popular destinations nearing $800. Consequently, many travelers are opting to drive rather than fly to save on airfare.

AAA recommends that motorists still traveling should drive cautiously, allow extra time for their journeys, and stay alert on the roads.
