RPCS3, the popular open-source PlayStation 3 emulator, has recently added a feature that allows users to play games directly from physical Blu-ray discs without the need to dump them onto a hard drive or SSD. This “plug and play” functionality supports games released as far back as 20 years ago, requiring only a compatible Blu-ray drive, with a list of supported models available on the RPCS3 website.
Initially available only on Windows, this feature has now been extended to Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, with reports suggesting that loading games from the disc is now faster. Additionally, PS4 and PS5 owners using Linux can launch PS3 games directly from a disc through RPCS3.
The development credits go to contributors digant73 and Megamouse. This update aligns with Sony’s plans to cease physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, highlighting a trend towards digital gaming. The project also previously integrated Steam library support, allowing emulated games to appear alongside standard titles.
This enhancement significantly benefits owners of PS3 physical media, making it easier to access and play their games.
