The Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, H.E. Lerato D. Mataboge, participated in the inaugural meeting of the AI for Good Global Commission held in Geneva during the AI for Good Global Summit. This high-level commission, initiated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), comprises over 40 founding members, including heads of state, CEOs, and leaders from global institutions.
The Commission aims to foster trust in artificial intelligence, broaden access to the technology, and utilize it for inclusive development. Co-chaired by H.E. Paul Kagame (President of Rwanda) and Marc Benioff (CEO of Salesforce), the Commission’s members include prominent international leaders and executives from leading tech companies.
Commissioner Mataboge’s seat emphasizes the African Union’s priority to advocate for inclusive and responsible AI that empowers individuals and transforms economies, particularly aiming to connect an estimated 2.2 billion people still offline. The Department of Infrastructure and Energy will focus on the infrastructure required for AI, targeting policies that align with Agenda 2063.
In her statement, Mataboge highlighted the importance of building foundational infrastructure—grids, fibre, data centres, and skill development—to ensure that the benefits of AI reach everyone. The inaugural meeting was a part of a significant week that included other global dialogues and forums related to AI governance.
