Bang Si-hyuk, the 54-year-old chairman of HYBE, has made a significant impact in the music industry. He studied aesthetics at Seoul National University before joining JYP Entertainment in 1997, where he wrote songs for popular acts like g.o.d, Park Ji-yoon, and Rain.

Founding Big Hit Entertainment

In 2005, Si-hyuk founded Big Hit Entertainment, where he continued to compose for artists, including Baek Ji-young and 2AM, establishing himself as a highly sought-after composer. The company’s first girl group, GLAM, debuted in 2012 but disbanded in 2015. However, BTS’s debut in 2013 marked a turning point, propelling Big Hit to global recognition and transforming it into South Korea’s largest music company.

Growth and Rebranding

Bang Si-hyuk expanded the company by acquiring Source Music in 2019 and Pledis Entertainment and KOZ Entertainment in 2020. In 2021, he rebranded the company as HYBE and stepped down as CEO in July, remaining as the board chairman and the company’s largest shareholder.

Public Persona

Despite his fame, Si-hyuk has kept his personal life private, making a recent sighting in Beverly Hills with livestreamer Seyeon notable. Bang’s interaction with Seyeon and her sister, including helping with restaurant reservations, sparked public interest, but HYBE clarified that he merely offered assistance and that there was no further relationship.

Recognition

In 2022, HYBE was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential companies, a testament to Bang Si-hyuk’s vision and leadership in shaping the K-pop landscape.
