The US has implemented restrictions on official activities and travel to Nogales, a border city in Mexico, allowing only essential movement during daylight hours due to unspecified threat information.

The US mission to Mexico has alerted citizens to this threat and the change in travel guidelines. Officials have not detailed the nature of the threat but have advised citizens to:

  • Exercise increased caution
  • Be aware of their surroundings
  • Seek shelter in the event of an incident
  • Follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement

Nogales, in the northern state of Sonora, is a well-known crossing point with a reputation for organized crime, smuggling, and occasional violence. The state borders the US states of Arizona to the north and New Mexico to the northeast.

As a precaution, the travel advisory rates Sonora as a Level 3 area, suggesting that travelers should reconsider visiting the region.
