Nebraska State Fair Celebrates Global Cultures
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – The Nebraska State Fair showcased a vibrant tapestry of cultures at the Fonner Park concourse, where various ambassadors from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Fulbright Association gathered to educate fairgoers.
The concourse buzzed with music, dance, and cultural exhibits, allowing attendees to explore diverse parts of the world. Parviz Jamalov, an ambassador from Tajikistan, emphasized the event’s goal: “We want to build bridges across cultures. We want to bring the world to Nebraska and have Nebraska learn about the world.”
With 29 students representing 19 countries, the event featured booths that displayed unique cultural elements. Indian ambassadors highlighted their rich fabric heritage, encouraging fairgoers to touch and feel the textiles. Drishidi Daaw noted, “We focused more on the fabric, even though we don’t have all of the fabrics, but then feel the fabrics, feel the art forms; that was the main idea.”
Mexico’s representation offered a diverse array of products, from traditional crafts to modern items. Ambassador Raul Puente described their table as showcasing “a little bit of everything,” reflecting the multifaceted nature of Mexican culture.
Visitors expressed enthusiasm as they engaged with the displays. Katja Baumann, originally from Germany, appreciated the opportunity to share aspects of her home country with her family, stating, “It was cool to show my boyfriend and kids some of my home country.”
The UNL Fulbright Association aims for this cultural exchange to be a two-way street, with hopes that both fairgoers and ambassadors learn from each other. Following the event, the ambassadors also toured the Stuhr Museum and the Grand Island Police Department, further immersing themselves in Nebraska’s culture.
