A Chinese travel influencer, Guo, is seeking justice after his dog, Chutou, a social media star with over 1.5 million followers, was allegedly stolen for around $30 and subsequently slaughtered for meat. Chutou, an 8-year-old Border Collie known for his friendly demeanor, went missing on May 11 while Guo was abroad.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed two individuals taking Chutou from Guo’s family’s farmland. Upon returning from his trip early to search for his dog, Guo confronted a suspect who claimed to have thought Chutou was a stray, despite the dog wearing a collar and tracker.
Guo later discovered that Chutou had been sold to a dog meat trader before being killed. The suspect dismissed Guo’s concerns, stating, “The dog is dead, so stop making a fuss.” When Guo sought the remains of Chutou, he was informed that they had already been discarded, with the butcher saying, “The hair was thrown in the rubbish long ago.”
Guo is determined to pursue legal action, highlighting the challenge posed by weak pet protection laws in China.
