Summary of Events at the Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice (CRSCSJ)
Jonathan Lightfoot, the director of the CRSCSJ, is contemplating resignation after a significant reduction in his compensation and course release time. The center, which focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion, offers essential programs for students, including a colloquia series and public speakers, and has played a pivotal role in establishing the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Veronica Lippencott, the associate director, expressed strong concerns about the center being “gutted.”
Skyler Holmes, a senior student, emphasized the importance of the center’s offerings, especially in light of the limited course options in African studies. Lightfoot has historically supported the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, particularly during contract negotiations.
Originally, Lightfoot was granted six hours of course release, which was cut to three hours following a university-wide budget reduction request. This adjustment was reportedly based on Hofstra’s need to reduce spending by 5%, 10%, and 15% across all units. Lightfoot voiced his dissatisfaction with the compensation cuts, stating it feels like he is being asked to work for free.
Lippencott’s adjunct position and limited compensation options were also affected, with budget cuts impacting student fellow funding. Jean Pierre, an undergraduate fellow, shared concerns about increased workload due to reduced support staff.
The central theme is the struggle to maintain vital programs and support for diversity amidst budget constraints, raising questions about the university’s commitment to these issues.
