Alabama Shakes Returns After 11 Years with New Album Inspired by Reunion
Alabama Shakes has released its first album in over a decade, marking a significant return for the band. Interestingly, their reunion was sparked by an invitation from Bo Hicks, co-founder of Druid City Brewing Co. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to perform at the brewery—a place that supported them long before their Grammy accolades.
Brittany Howard, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, was keen to reconnect with her bandmates, guitarist Heath Fogg and bassist Zac Cockrell. They agreed to rehearse, which led to a productive and enjoyable session that prompted them to continue working together.
The result is “I Must Be Dreaming,” an 11-track album composed of love songs and sharp social commentary. Howard explained that her creative process felt different this time, revealing unexpected insights and vulnerabilities.
One standout track, “I Feel Hope Coming,” combines political themes with hopeful messaging. Howard emphasizes the importance of resilience amidst chaos and stresses that people are becoming more aware of their surroundings.
Another notable song is “Garden,” which reflects Howard’s connection to nature and love, likening care in relationships to nurturing a garden.
The band had not officially disbanded but took a break after two successful albums: “Boys & Girls” (2012) and “Sound & Color” (2015). Howard articulated the importance of protecting their artistry, stating that not everything needs to be a rushed competition.
With renewed perspectives and personal growth, Howard shared that the band feels revitalized. The reunion has sparked creativity, resulting in a fresh and exciting album ready to be shared with the world.
