Two Additional Seattle-Area Casinos Shutting Down, 238 Employees Affected as Maverick Gaming Exits Washington State

The recent closures of Maverick Gaming’s casinos in Washington are a significant development in the state’s gambling landscape. Following a lengthy battle over sports betting regulations—which favor tribal casinos—Maverick has decided to shut down the Great American Casino and Riverside Casino in Tukwila, resulting in 238 job losses.

Maverick’s struggles stem from its inability to operate competitively under Washington’s tribal-only sports betting law, which has hindered its commercial cardrooms while tribal entities have increased their political contributions to key state figures. The company has faced substantial layoffs, totaling at least 426 this year, amidst its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

These closures highlight the larger issue of regulatory challenges faced by commercial casinos in Washington, particularly in light of the favorable environment for tribal operations. The impact of these regulatory decisions and the political dynamics surrounding them could continue to reshape Washington’s gambling industry.
