Adoption Success in Oklahoma: Over 600 Pets Find New Homes
Oklahoma City, OKLAHOMA — Last week, more than 600 dogs and cats were adopted in Oklahoma through the Best Friends Animal Society’s “Adopt Your MVP” initiative. This event involved multiple local shelters and rescue groups, encouraging residents to choose their Most Valuable Pet.
Adoption fees were either reduced or waived, making it more accessible for families to welcome new furry companions. In the Oklahoma City metro area alone, 260 pets found their forever homes.
Best Friends Animal Society is actively working with shelters to achieve a no-kill policy, emphasizing that adoption events are essential to this mission. According to BFAS, no-kill shelters are becoming the standard across the U.S., with over two-thirds of shelters now classified as no-kill.
Looking ahead to 2025, BFAS reports that 61 out of 106 animal shelters in Oklahoma maintained or achieved no-kill status last year. From the 45 shelters still striving for this goal, 31 are close, needing to save fewer than 100 pets.
