Ohio State Patrol Enhances Road Presence for Labor Day Weekend
In light of increased travel during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is stepping up its presence on the state’s roads to prevent fatal crashes. Last year, Ohio saw a surge in traffic-related fatalities, with 27 deaths recorded in 23 crashes—a 35% increase from the previous year. Notably, 17 of these fatalities were linked to impaired driving.
Safety Risks for Roadside Workers
Increased traffic not only endangers motorists but also poses risks for roadside workers like tow truck operators, who must work close to moving vehicles. Juston Oehlers, with over two decades in the towing industry, shared the challenges of his job, emphasizing concerns for his safety and his family when responding to roadside emergencies.
State Measures and Recommendations
To mitigate risks, the Ohio Department of Transportation is adjusting work zones and urging drivers to remain vigilant in active construction areas. Lieutenant Brice Nihiser of the Ohio State Highway Patrol highlighted the importance of following traffic laws, such as observing speed limits, avoiding distractions, driving sober, and wearing seatbelts.
The patrol’s heightened vigilance aims to prevent accidents before they escalate into tragedies. Oehlers noted the increase in calls during festive periods and acknowledged the emotional strain of working away from his family during holidays.

In preparation for the busy weekend, ODOT has analyzed travel patterns to identify peak traffic times. Motorists are advised to check road conditions and plan their trips accordingly for a safer travel experience.
