Portland Labor Day Weekend Travel Update

PORTLAND (WGME) – This Labor Day weekend, Vacationland is gearing up for a busy influx of travelers. AAA estimates that around 50 million Americans will be on the move, with a significant number hitting the roads.

Traffic and Gas Prices

The Maine Turnpike Authority anticipates approximately 1.2 million vehicles will travel through the state during the holiday weekend. In addition to heavy traffic, gas prices are also making headlines. The national average is $4.14 per gallon, while Maine’s average is slightly higher at $4.17. Notably, this year marks the first-time gas prices have surpassed $4.00 during Labor Day weekend. Diesel prices have also reached a new high at $5.85 per gallon, surpassing last year’s record of $5.82.

Safety Reminders

Travelers are encouraged to prioritize safety. Rebecca Grover, Director of Communications for the Maine Turnpike Authority, notes that heavy northbound travel is expected on Friday and an exodus southbound on Monday, particularly after noon. Motorists should stay focused on the road and limit distractions, such as using mobile phones.

For those looking to avoid the holiday rush, hitting the road early in the morning is recommended.
