Maani’s Mela: A Celebration of Culture in Columbus
Maani’s, a Pakistani-inspired cafe formerly known as Sufi Chai House, is launching a vibrant cultural event known as a mela this Sunday at Seventh Son Brewing Co. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The owner, Maliha Pyarali, a recent Ohio State graduate, aims to bring together the community to celebrate the joy of gathering, reminiscent of traditional Pakistani customs.
Creating a Welcoming Space
Pyarali’s vision for the event is rooted in her desire to build a sense of community that embraces individuals from diverse backgrounds. Reflecting on her own experiences, she noted the importance of creating a space where everyone feels welcome, especially for those who may sometimes feel out of place in cultural events.
A Melting Pot of Artistic Expression
The mela will showcase a variety of local small businesses, artists, and performers, including a unique blend of music, dancing, and traditional mehendi (henna body art). This rich cultural experience also aims to preserve and share elements meaningful to the Pakistani diaspora.
Among the featured vendors is Kavya Chintakayala, a third-year computer science and engineering student, who will offer live portrait sketches and digital art prints. She highlights the significance of actively engaging with one’s culture, something she hopes the mela will facilitate.
A Fusion of Culinary Delights
The event promises an exciting drink menu created in collaboration with Daan, incorporating fusion flavors that highlight both Pakistani and Cantonese influences. Attendees can expect to enjoy unique offerings like salted egg yolk creme chai and mango jasmine tea, along with custom fragrances that enhance the experience.

Pyarali hopes to establish Maani’s Mela as a recurring seasonal event that celebrates various aspects of Pakistani culture, fostering a sense of belonging and hospitality for all attendees. As she says, it’s about creating a space where friends can gather and enjoy each other’s company.
