Expect Busy Highways, Ferries During Labor Day Weekend Travel

Travelers should prepare for significant traffic delays during the approaching Labor Day weekend.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) anticipates increased congestion on state highways and ferries. To mitigate delays, most highway construction will be paused; however, travelers may still face holdups in popular areas due to accidents and wildfires.
“We urge you to plan ahead, stay alert, and give yourselves extra time to reach your destination,” WSDOT stated.
The agency forecasts high traffic volumes on key highways such as:
- US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass
- I-90 between North Bend and Cle Elum
- I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma
- I-5 between Bellingham and the Canadian border
These routes are expected to experience the heaviest congestion from 9 AM to early afternoon. For detailed predictions of heavy traffic times, travelers can access WSDOT’s travel charts here.
The ongoing Revive I-5 project has reduced the Ship Canal Bridge to two lanes, with the Harvard Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-5 closed until mid-October. The express lanes are currently operational only on the northbound side.
In addition to highway traffic, Washington State Ferries expect around 400,000 passengers over the long weekend, marking the busiest summer for the ferries since 2019. Saturday, September 5, is anticipated to be the peak day. WSDOT recommends using the WSDOT mobile app or visiting the WSF website for real-time updates before heading to the terminal.
“Prepare for long lines and extended wait times,” WSDOT cautions. To minimize delays, riders should consider early-morning or late-night sailings or using public transit to walk or bike onto the ferry where feasible.
WSDOT also emphasizes fire safety: travelers should avoid tossing lit cigarettes from their vehicles, prevent towing chains from dragging, and refrain from parking on dry grass. In case of brush fires with no emergency personnel present, notify authorities by calling 911.
“Fire danger remains high across the state,” WSDOT warned. Those traveling near active wildfires should remain vigilant and stay informed about closures, as wind conditions can change rapidly.
