Expect Busy Highways, Ferries During Labor Day Weekend Travel

Travelers should brace for significant traffic delays over the Labor Day weekend, as congestion is anticipated on both state highways and waterways.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is pausing most highway construction to alleviate congestion. However, delays are likely in popular transit areas due to crashes and wildfire activity. WSDOT advises travelers to plan ahead, remain alert, and allocate extra time for their journeys.
Key highways expected to be the busiest include:
- US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass
- I-90 between North Bend and Cle Elum
- I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma
- I-5 between Bellingham and the Canadian border
Congestion on these routes is expected primarily from 9 AM to early afternoon. More detailed travel times can be found on the WSDOT website.
The Revive I-5 project will continue to affect the Ship Canal Bridge, reducing it to two lanes, and the Harvard Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-5 is closed until mid-October. Only northbound express lanes will be operational.
In addition, Washington State Ferries anticipates around 400,000 passengers this weekend, marking the busiest summer for the ferries since 2019. Saturday, September 5, is expected to be particularly crowded. WSDOT recommends that travelers use the WSDOT mobile app or visit the WSF website for information before heading to the terminals to minimize wait times.
WSDOT warns travelers to prepare for long wait times and suggests opting for early-morning or late-night sailings or using transit options to walk or bike onto ferries when possible.
Fire Safety Reminder
WSDOT urges drivers to prevent roadside fires by avoiding actions that could create sparks, such as:
- Disposing of lit cigarettes improperly
- Allowing towing chains to drag
- Parking on dry grass with hot exhausts
Travelers are advised to notify authorities of any brush fires if no emergency crews are present by calling 911. With fire danger remaining high statewide, those traveling near active wildfires should stay informed about closures, as winds can shift rapidly.
