Travel Delays at LaGuardia Airport Due to Storms
Thousands of travelers faced delays at LaGuardia Airport as storms across the nation threatened to disrupt the busy Labor Day weekend travel period. On Thursday evening, few flights departed on time, with around half experiencing delays, although cancellations remained limited.
One group, waiting to attend a family reunion, had their departure pushed back by more than two hours. Norma, a traveler, expressed concern about flying during stormy weather, stating she dislikes turbulence.
Airlines were bracing for one of the busiest travel weekends, with over 280,000 flights expected. The Transportation Security Administration anticipated screening close to 3 million travelers during this period. Major hubs, particularly Chicago, saw significant delays affecting connecting flights.
Road travel was also heavy, with gasoline prices averaging $4.14 per gallon, about a dollar more than last year. Some travelers reported only minor delays; for instance, Tony’s flight from Toronto was delayed about 20 minutes.
For those traveling on Friday, AAA recommended avoiding the roads between noon and 8 p.m. and noted that weather conditions are expected to improve for air travel.
