Pasadena Police Advocate for Safe Transportation on National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day This Wednesday – Pasadena Now

National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day

The Pasadena Police Department is encouraging all schools, families, and students to participate in National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 7. This annual event promotes healthy and safe travel habits for children commuting to school.

Important Safety Reminders for Drivers

With increased foot and bike traffic expected, motorists are reminded to:

  • Be prepared to stop for school buses and children crossing the street.
  • Slow down in school zones.
  • Stay alert, as these precautions are necessary every day, not just on the event.

Pasadena Police Lt. Mathew Campeau emphasized, “This annual event is a reminder that students biking and walking to school safely is a shared commitment.”

Tips for Students Walking, Biking, or Rolling to School

  1. Plan your route on roads with sidewalks or bike paths away from heavy traffic. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far left as possible.
  2. Bicyclists must ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction as vehicles.
  3. Wear a properly fitted helmet when biking or rolling.
  4. Use crosswalks at stop signs or signals. Cross at street corners where crosswalks are unmarked.
  5. Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
  6. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing and never assume they see you.
  7. Be visible: Wear bright clothing during the day, and reflective materials or use a flashlight when it’s dark.
  8. Stay alert: Avoid using electronic devices that distract from road awareness.

Historical Context

The first national observance, initially called Walk Our Children to School Day, was in 1997. The program now encourages participation in October, with 997 events registered nationwide for this year’s observance.

Local Initiatives

Pasadena has been awarded grants for Safe Routes to School programs to educate and encourage students. Funding for the celebration comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant aimed at supporting pedestrian rights and bicycle safety.

Schools interested in participating can register at walkbiketoschool.org to track their involvement in this important initiative.

Most schools will continue to celebrate throughout October, fostering a community commitment to active, healthy, and safe transportation options for students.
