Fort Worth Arts School Takes No Measures Against Board Chair Amid Parent Protests

The situation surrounding board chair Cheryl Bean of the Texas Center for Arts + Academics has stirred controversy, following a now-deleted social media post that many parents deemed offensive. Despite calls for her resignation and protests outside the school, Bean stated that she would remain in her position, citing her board’s support—though only one director publicly confirmed this.

The contentious post featured an AI-generated image of WNBA player Sophie Cunningham and drew criticism for its portrayal of Black players, leading to accusations of racial insensitivity. Bean claimed the intent was to celebrate female athletes and did not realize the implications of the image when she posted it.

During a recent board meeting, opinions were divided. Some parents accused Bean of lacking accountability, while others defended her leadership. Key figures, including Rev. Daniel Salls and former board chair Daniel Bates, expressed their support for Bean, underscoring her contributions to the school. However, the protest organizer, Alycia Bennett, emphasized ongoing dissatisfaction and a perceived climate of fear regarding retaliation among parents speaking out.

The next board meeting is scheduled for September 28, where continued discussions around leadership and accountability are expected.
