Family Vacation in Wisconsin Dells: A Memorable Getaway
In December, my parents gifted us a family vacation, a rare opportunity considering the challenge of coordinating schedules for our family of 14. After a year of discussions, we decided on Wisconsin Dells, a popular Midwest vacation spot renowned for its natural beauty and family-friendly activities.
Our Accommodations
We secured a VRBO vacation rental away from the hustle and bustle of water parks, which was a relief. The two-story duplex included spacious living areas and play zones for the kids, featuring everything from foosball tables to climbing structures. The kids loved it and didn’t want to leave.
Attractions and Experiences
While exploring Wisconsin Dells, we quickly realized that many attractions felt like tourist traps. Broadway was filled with arcades and interactive experiences, but the costs added up quickly. We opted to save our money for activities that offered better value.
Every meal was an adventure in themed restaurants—Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty served family-style breakfast while Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille impressed with its Lego and Star Wars decor. Although the kids adored the decor, adults found the menus repetitive.
Skipping Water Parks for Nature
Not big fans of water parks, we skipped those options to enjoy Wisconsin Dells’ stunning landscapes. We went on a horse-drawn carriage ride through sandstone gorges, followed by a duckboat tour of various waterways. These experiences were the highlight of our trip, showcasing the area’s natural beauty.
Final Thoughts
While Wisconsin Dells had plenty to offer for families, including attractions and natural scenery, it may not be a destination we’d want to revisit. Navigating touristy areas can be overwhelming, and we felt we had checked off many of our interests. Nonetheless, I cherish the experiences we had and the memories created as a family.
