Consumers Energy Unveils 20-Year Energy Supply Plan
SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) — Consumers Energy has introduced its 20-year blueprint aimed at providing reliable and affordable energy. This plan involves a combination of natural gas, solar, wind, pumped storage, and battery storage.
New Natural Gas Plants Planned
The proposal includes the construction of two fast-starting natural gas plants in Bay and Genesee counties, designed to meet peak energy demands in Michigan.
Anita Griffin, Consumers Energy’s vice president of commercial operations and planning, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its significance for the company’s future.
“We’re replacing the Karn facility with new generation capacity. The facilities will be positioned in Thetford Township and Hampton Township, with a projected online date of 2031,” Griffin explained. The plants will generate 1.4 gigawatts total, with 450 megawatts in Hampton Township and 900 megawatts in Genesee County.
Impact on Communities
The plan promises to stimulate investment in communities statewide. Griffin noted the potential for thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions, creating a robust tax base for local areas.
Savings for Customers
Consumers Energy aims to expand programs that have already saved customers over $8 billion since 2009, projecting total savings of $18 billion by 2050.
The full energy supply plan and related documents are submitted to the Michigan Public Service Commission for approval within the coming year.
