Consumers Energy announces plans to almost double electricity generation over the next two decades.

Consumers Energy has submitted its long-term energy plan, known as the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), to state regulators. This plan is essential for ensuring that Michigan’s future electricity demand is met, aligning with the state’s clean energy goals.

Key points from the plan include:

  • Capacity Increase: Consumers Energy aims to more than double its electricity capacity by 2040, primarily through wind, solar, and battery storage, while also proposing the construction of two new natural gas plants.

  • Data Center Demand: The plan accounts for the growing demand from new data centers, which is a significant factor in overall electricity needs.

  • Environmental Concerns: Environmental groups are urging scrutiny of the necessity for new gas plants, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing renewable energy resources.

Consumers Energy is committed to supporting various growth sectors, including residential developments and manufacturing, while balancing clean energy initiatives with the need for more electricity.
