Kansas City Wellness Court: A New Path to Recovery
The Kansas City Municipal Court has merged its drug and mental health courts to create the innovative Wellness Court, operational since January 2025. This new court aims to provide holistic support by developing pilot programs for participants navigating the court system.
Entrepreneurship Program
The latest initiative empowers participants with entrepreneurship lessons and business startup opportunities. Ronald Smith, a participant, emphasizes that this program has given him hope for a future beyond a cycle of drugs and crime. At 59, he feels he is finally on a path to self-improvement, expressing gratitude for the court’s transformative approach.
“It did in me what 45 years worth of prison did not do,” Smith stated, highlighting the court’s positive influence.
Smith’s personal journey reflects a commitment to breaking the cycle of incarceration and fostering personal growth. He was the first to enroll in the entrepreneurship class led by Johnny Waller Jr. of Clear Tomorrow KC.
Johnny Waller’s Insights
Waller, who has a background fraught with adversity, including gang involvement and multiple arrests, has successfully transitioned to entrepreneurship. He now shares his experience to inspire others, turning the skills he learned in illegal activities into a legitimate business framework.
“People will slam a door in your face, but I wanna teach people how to build their own door,” Waller passionately expressed.
Support from Judge Courtney Wachel
Judge Courtney Wachel has played a pivotal role in facilitating opportunities for participants. Recognizing a common desire among participants to start businesses, she organized a pitch competition with real stakes, offering seed money to winners.
“I feel so lucky to be a municipal court judge because I feel like this is a really good place to impact people,” Wachel said.
A New Hope
Participants like Smith credit the court’s compassionate approach for reigniting their drive to succeed. They work tirelessly towards graduation, after which their cases are dismissed, providing a fresh start.
Two nonprofits, Clear Tomorrow KC and Beyond the Bench, support these initiatives and welcome donations to assist individuals involved with the justice system.
