Flights restarting following equipment failure that impacted Northeast air travel, says Transportation Secretary Duffy.

Travel Disruptions Across the U.S. Due to Equipment Outages

NEWARK, N.J.—Travelers across the United States encountered significant disruptions on Monday as equipment failures severely affected flights at Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport.

More than 1,000 flights were canceled, and over 6,000 delays were reported nationwide, with Newark and Philadelphia being the most severely impacted.

The problems initiated early Monday morning when a circuit failed at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility. According to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, when the backup system was activated, it was discovered that the corresponding backup line in New Jersey had been cut.

To resolve the circuit issue in Philadelphia, airspace in the Northeast was temporarily closed. Ground stops were also applied to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, though operations at these airports have since resumed.

Hours later, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that after initial fixes did not work, telecom lines had been repaired, allowing “all airport operations in the Northeast [to] resume.” However, he advised that it would take time to clear existing delays and urged travelers to check with their airlines for current updates.

The outage caused widespread delays and cancellations, affecting the Northeast and ripple effects throughout the nation. United Airlines, which operates a hub at Newark Airport, indicated that it would no longer be canceling domestic flights for the remainder of the day.

In a statement, United acknowledged the disruption, assuring customers that they would work to safely reconnect them with their destinations. The airline has also issued a travel waiver to help travelers manage their plans.

Note: This is a developing story; updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
