Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) – Kansans are gearing up for a busy Labor Day weekend as travel is expected to surge, despite a shorter holiday and the return to school for many kids. Shawn Steward, Kansas AAA manager of public and government affairs, noted that activities during this holiday period remain high.
Rising Gas Prices
As of September 3, gas prices in Kansas are averaging $3.78, a significant increase of 90 cents from last year. AAA attributes this rise to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Drivers like Jackson Morris, a Washburn University student, are feeling the impact. “I spend about $85-95 for a full tank every three weeks due to college commitments,” he shared.
Local Plans for Some Students
Morris mentioned that he and fellow students will be staying local this weekend. “I’m from Dallas and can’t go home due to football season,” he explained. Instead, they plan to hang out and organize a dinner together.
Safety Tips from AAA
For those heading out, AAA Kansas encourages drivers to ensure their vehicles are in top condition. Last year, AAA handled more than 400,000 assistance calls, with many related to breakdowns. Steward advised, “Make sure that you get your car checked out to avoid being stuck on the road this weekend.”
