The Culture Centers Programming Board Block Party on Sept. 3 brought students together on Melrose Avenue, featuring activities from painting tote bags to playing Lotería. Led by Fenix Lara, executive director of the board, the event aimed to promote engagement among students and introduce them to the four cultural centers: Afro-American, Asian Pacific American, Latino Native American, and Pride Alliance.
Lara emphasized the importance of cultural respect and exploration. The event, now fully student-run, shifted focus to interactive activities such as lawn games and tours, offering a more immersive experience. Attendees like Francisco Magdaleno and Kanasia Truitt shared their positive experiences and noted how the centers provide a supportive community for marginalized students.
Overall, the block party served as a platform for students to step out of their comfort zones and foster connections in a predominantly white institution, creating inclusive spaces for diverse voices.
