Koehler Paper’s Kehl Mill Innovates with Voith’s SteamBooster

At the Koehler Paper mill in Kehl, Germany, Voith’s SteamBooster system is transforming high-temperature exhaust heat into valuable process steam, significantly contributing to a three-stage heat recovery initiative aimed at reducing natural gas consumption. This innovative solution, operational since June 2025, is expected to save up to 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Energy Recovery and Reduced Emissions

Installed on the offline coating machine SM 8, which produces machine-glazed specialty papers, the SteamBooster utilizes exhaust heat from Voith’s MCB dryers. Previously wasted, this exhaust heat, reaching temperatures of up to 300°C, is now being harnessed. The system employs a heat exchanger to convert hot air from the dryers into steam, which is then reintegrated into the production process at a rate of approximately one ton of steam per hour, effectively lowering boiler loads and associated operating costs.

Proven Technology Adaptation

Originally designed for tissue hoods, Voith’s technology has been adapted for diverse paper machines capable of operating with exhaust-air temperatures above 100°C. Its straightforward installation process allows for easy retrofitting during maintenance cycles or integration into new installations. Depending on configuration, average recovery can range from one to five tons of steam per hour, with a payback period typically under two years.

The collaboration between Voith and Koehler Paper at the Kehl mill exemplifies a successful partnership focused on energy efficiency across the papermaking process. As industries face increasing pressure to decarbonize, Voith is committed to providing a broad spectrum of heat recovery and electrification technologies, thereby significantly lowering energy usage and carbon footprints.

Dr. Mario Vollmer, Innovation Manager Energy at Koehler Group, expressed satisfaction with the installation process, noting that the partnership with Voith has yielded notable energy efficiencies.

Martin Dauner, Product Manager Steam & Condensate at Voith Paper, highlights that the SteamBooster offers a low-risk, high-reward solution, tailored to site-specific conditions, and can be easily installed during regular maintenance. As evidenced by various case studies, paper mills can anticipate a payback period of less than two years, marking SteamBooster as a pivotal advancement in energy efficiency.
