LSU Dominates McNeese State in Nonconference Finale
LSU’s football team showcased their prowess in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, defeating McNeese State 63-14 in their final nonconference matchup. The No. 11 Tigers (4-1) displayed an explosive offense, finishing with 731 total yards—just shy of the program record of 746 set in 1977.
Sam Leavitt’s Performance
Quarterback Sam Leavitt, who played through a hamstring injury, completed 18 of 23 passes for 176 yards, securing three touchdowns despite throwing one interception. His efficiency was highlighted early as he led two quick touchdown drives, helping LSU establish a commanding lead.
Defensive Standouts
LSU’s defense was relentless. They initially allowed two first downs on McNeese’s opening drive but shut the Cowboys down for most of the game. Edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen recorded his eighth sack of the season, contributing to a three-and-out that allowed LSU to score on their next five drives.
Offensive Contributions
Freshman receiver Corey Barber had a notable game with six catches for 76 yards, including two touchdown receptions. Harlem Berry, a sophomore running back, rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown. LSU also saw impressive contributions from Stacey Gage, who rushed for touchdowns of 46 and 39 yards, and even defensive tackle Deuce Geralds, who scored on a direct-snap play.
Game Stats
Despite a few lapses in the second half, where McNeese scored two touchdowns, LSU completely dominated the game, outgaining McNeese 731-196 and achieving 37 first downs compared to just six for the Cowboys. This win marked LSU’s highest scoring output since a 72-0 victory over Grambling earlier in the season.
As the Tigers transition to their remaining Southeastern Conference schedule, they will face challenges ahead but appear prepared after this commanding performance.
