VENICE, Italy — Sisters Rooney and Kate Mara star as sisters speaking in unison in Werner Herzog’s new film, “Bucking Fastard,” which premiered Thursday at the Venice Film Festival.
Herzog, 83, was inspired by twins who spoke in unison 45 years ago, but the idea remained dormant until the suggestion to cast the Mara sisters emerged. This encouraged him to write the script in just five days.
The fictional characters, Jean and Joan Holbrooke, embark on both a literal and spiritual journey to find their identities. Joining the Maras on the Lido is Orlando Bloom, who plays the object of their affections. The film currently lacks a U.S. release date.
Rooney and Kate Mara’s First Film Together
Rooney Mara expressed initial trepidation about their unique roles but quickly embraced their shared history, stating, “There was just this unspoken world between us.” She added, “I’ve never laughed so much; we had so much fun.”
Kate described their unison dialogue as musical, noting its natural flow. Their rehearsal period was significantly shortened; Herzog wrapped things up in just five days, saying they’d continue in Ireland before the camera.
Orlando Bloom as the Bucking Fastard
Herzog shared excitement about working with Bloom and noted his transformation from “the heartthrob for the teenies” to his new role.
Bloom remarked that Herzog “creates a sacred space for magic to happen,” emphasizing the significance of being at the Venice Film Festival discussing a film with Herzog.
Dedicated to David Lynch
Herzog dedicated the film to the late filmmaker David Lynch, expressing a wish that Lynch could have been the first to see “Bucking Fastard.” He reflected on their mutual understanding of each other’s artistic work, highlighting the loss felt by Lynch’s absence.
