Art Exhibition at Latchis Gallery: Riverfront Connections

The Friends of Island Park is showcasing the “Riverfront Connections” exhibition, highlighting the history and current state of Island Park, situated between two bridges spanning the Connecticut River in downtown Brattleboro. The exhibit features diverse artworks inspired by the scenic landscape of the river, bridges, and island, along with historical documents from the Brattleboro Historical Society.
A standout feature is a four-panel mural by Cynthia Parker-Houghton, celebrating the circus history on the island, supported by Brattleboro-West Arts. The mural will eventually be installed near the Anna Hunt Marsh Bridge.

Historical Context:
Historically, the Island hosted various events, from sports to circus performances, and was once inhabited by indigenous peoples. The Vernon Dam, constructed in 1909, drastically reduced the island’s area.
The community group Friends of Island Park was formed in spring 2024 to clean and maintain the Island, facing challenges regarding public access due to concerns from the Hinsdale selectboard. Currently, selectboard members from both towns are working towards a solution to retain public non-motorized use of the Island.
The Friends of Island Park also aim to promote the natural beauty and potential recreational activities in the area, which connects multiple trails and amenities for various users.
