Momentum for White Hydrogen Drilling Accelerates Across Three Continents

Scientists and start-ups are excited about the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen, known as geologic or white hydrogen, which could play a significant role in the clean energy transition. Research teams in the U.S., Canada, and Australia are actively mapping potential sources of this hydrogen, highlighting its advantages over green hydrogen, which is still costly and difficult to produce.

Recent discoveries, such as a large hydrogen source in Australia’s Pilbara region, reveal the potential of extracting hydrogen from iron ore deposits. A study from Edith Cowan University showed promising results by simulating underground conditions that boost hydrogen production through chemical reactions involving minerals like magnetite.

In Canada, researchers found hydrogen accumulating in ancient rocks, indicating untapped potential for a domestic energy source. Companies in both Canada and the U.S. are starting exploration efforts, with the U.S. Geological Survey even mapping potential hydrogen-rich areas.

As interest grows in geologic hydrogen, it could emerge as a viable alternative to green hydrogen, contributing significantly to energy sustainability and innovation.
