Labor Day Travel in Georgia: Heavy Traffic and Rising Gas Prices
SAVANNAH, Ga. — As Labor Day weekend approaches, travelers in Georgia are bracing for a busy travel period, particularly on Thursday and Friday, which are expected to see the highest traffic levels.
According to AAA, the average gas price in Georgia is approximately $3.85 per gallon, indicating that drivers may face increased fuel costs throughout the holiday weekend. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has predicted the heaviest traffic along major routes such as I-16, I-95, and various interstates in southeast Georgia, central Georgia, and metro Atlanta. To alleviate congestion, GDOT has suspended lane closures for the duration of the holiday weekend.
Additionally, AAA notes that popular destinations, including Georgia, Orlando, and New York, are experiencing a rise in travel demand, with flight prices roughly 20% higher than last year.
Travelers are advised to avoid peak times on the road, specifically Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. and Friday from noon to 8 p.m. To avoid heavy traffic, it is recommended to leave early and steer clear of afternoon departures.
