How One Entrepreneur is Bringing Healthy Choices and Maryland Hospitality to Travelers at BWI Airport

By Very Local Brand Studio on Oct. 5, 2026

For many travelers, a stop at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) is merely a part of their journey. However, for local business owner Tisha Burnett, each interaction is an opportunity to leave a lasting impression and provide visitors with a taste of Baltimore even before they leave the terminal.

“I put a lot of heart into what I do,” she says. “We bring happiness and smiles, so people get really excited when they see us.”

For the last decade, Tisha has operated businesses at BWI, building on nearly 20 years of experience as a franchise owner. After running several Smoothie King locations in Maryland, she expanded into the airport with both Smoothie King and Rita’s Italian Ice.

This move was not just about business; it was about serving travelers while showcasing local establishments that enhance the airport experience.

“I travel a lot myself. When I travel, I want something healthy, something quick, something convenient. That’s why Smoothie King was the perfect fit,” Tisha explains.

At BWI, convenience comes hand-in-hand with choice. Smoothie King’s menu boasts nutritious options for travelers, including vegan selections and favorites like the Angel Food smoothie made with strawberries, bananas, and nonfat milk.

“Most travelers come in, grab their smoothie, and head to the plane,” Tisha says. “We’ve changed what people expect when they’re looking for something quick in the terminal.”

Her Rita’s Italian Ice location offers refreshing desserts for passengers wanting to unwind before takeoff. Like Smoothie King, Rita’s offers gluten-free options, catering to various dietary needs.

As BWI grows, so does Tisha’s business. She recently expanded into the airport’s new A/B Connector, marking an exciting opportunity to serve even more passengers.

“I was really excited to get the space,” she shares. “I’m looking forward to serving a lot more people.”

This growth aligns with BWI’s operator Fraport’s mission of creating an authentic sense of place through local partnerships. Travelers will find various restaurants and retailers operated by members of the Baltimore community throughout the terminals.

“I think Fraport does a fantastic job of ensuring the local community is represented here at the airport,” Tisha emphasizes.

Unlike neighborhood shops, airport businesses often have just one chance to make an impression. Therefore, every interaction counts.

“On the street, you build relationships with people you see every day. In the airport, you’ll probably only see someone once before they’re off to their next destination. It’s crucial to make that first impression,” she states.

For Tisha, making that impression goes beyond selling a smoothie or frozen treat; it’s about helping travelers feel a connection to Baltimore—even if they’re just passing through.

“We want people to get a feel for Baltimore while they’re here,” she says. “Even if they never leave the airport, they should feel like they’ve experienced a little bit of the city.”

Through local ownership, friendly service, and fresh food made for travelers on the go, businesses like Smoothie King and Rita’s Italian Ice are positively shaping the experience at BWI Airport. For visitors who are arriving, departing, or connecting, it serves as a reminder that sometimes the smallest stop on a journey can leave the most significant impression.
