Fervo Energy and Google have finalized a 396 MW power purchase agreement for the Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems project in Utah, marking the largest enhanced geothermal PPA globally. Expected to start operations in 2028, the agreement will provide Google with carbon-free electricity for a potential data center in the area, with an additional option to expand purchases to approximately 600 MW, potentially reaching nearly 1 GW by June 2030.
This deal builds on their existing partnership, originating from Project Red, Fervo’s geothermal pilot in Nevada, which began operating in 2023 and supplies electricity to local grids, including Google’s data centers. In 2024, Fervo secured a 115 MW PPA with Google and NV Energy, aiding in the integration of geothermal power into Nevada’s energy system.
The Cape Station project aims to grow its initial 100 MW phase through standardized GeoBlock development and a modular, scalable supply model designed for data centers. The project also stands to benefit from Utah’s SB132, which may grant Fervo and Google more flexible contracting options.
