CDC Issues Global Travel Warning for Potentially Fatal ‘Dengue Fever’

The CDC has issued a global travel alert for dengue, noting that travelers returning to the U.S. have tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. This alert, classified as a “Level 1” notice, encourages travelers to practice basic precautions.

Key Points:

  • Dengue Overview: Also known as “breakbone fever,” dengue is transmitted through infected mosquito bites. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle pain, and in severe cases, can lead to hemorrhaging and organ failure.
  • Severity: While many infected individuals may experience mild symptoms or none at all, severe cases can be life-threatening, especially for children and those with underlying health conditions.
  • Current Risk: Dengue poses a continuous risk in several countries. The CDC has identified regions with elevated risk including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, and Vietnam, among others.
  • Cases in the U.S.: Over 525 dengue cases have been reported in the U.S. in 2026.

Prevention Tips:

  • Use insect repellent.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants.
  • Stay in air-conditioned or screened-in accommodations.

Travel Guidance:

The CDC’s advisory does not recommend canceling travel plans but serves as a reminder for travelers to remain vigilant, especially in tropical and subtropical areas where outbreaks are common.
