Sacramento City Council to Discuss New Entertainment Zones for Outdoor Drinking
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento City Council is poised to consider new Entertainment Zones that would allow outdoor drinking during special events, marking the third time in just over a year that the Council has revisited this proposal.
During Tuesday’s session, the Council aims to bypass its Law and Legislation Committee to review an ordinance amending city code, with a target date set for consideration on September 15, 2026.
The initiative aims to “create engaging and impactful destinations that encourage local economic growth,” according to a city staff report. The intention is to enhance the experience for residents and visitors while activating commercial corridors.
In 2025, Sacramento established its first entertainment zones, permitting the sale and consumption of to-go alcoholic beverages at events like the Rainbow Festival.

Requests for additional entertainment zones have come from downtown, midtown, Broadway, and the Oak Park areas, aiming to extend opportunities beyond the central city.
