Ridgefield’s Greely Building Transformed with Community Art

A recent beautification project led by Ridgefield Main Street, in collaboration with the Port of Ridgefield, has transformed the Greely Building in downtown Ridgefield. This revitalization includes large-scale photo panels that celebrate the community’s history, culture, and natural beauty.
The project features captivating images of local landmarks, such as the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and the Chinookan Plankhouse, showcasing the city’s rich heritage. Kelliana Cole, interim executive director of Ridgefield Main Street, emphasized the aim of creating a welcoming environment that connects residents and visitors to the community’s unique identity.
Originally constructed in 1920 as a car and tractor dealership, the Greely Building has been the focus of several beautification efforts. Stemp, chair of the Design Committee, came up with the innovative idea of covering the building’s windows with photographs after being challenged to improve its appearance. The concept quickly gained traction, leading to a broader collaboration with local organizations and a printing company, Ballyhoo, which helped produce the panels.
The photographs, contributed by various community members and organizations, resonate deeply with residents. Sherry Varela highlighted how the project not only beautifies the space but also serves as a celebration of Ridgefield’s shared history.
Looking forward, organizers hope that these photo panels will inspire further community-driven projects aimed at preserving Ridgefield’s history. Stemp envisions that these photographs could inform future development, maintaining a connection to the past while embracing change.
