Montana Tech Introduces Nuclear Energy Certificate and Master’s Degree Program

New Nuclear Energy Programs at Montana Technological University

Montana Technological University is excited to introduce two new programs aimed at advancing nuclear energy education: an undergraduate certificate in nuclear energy and a Master of Science in Nuclear Energy. These programs were officially approved by the Montana Board of Regents in March 2026 and are designed to develop a skilled workforce to guide Montana’s future in energy.

Bob Morris, the Lance Energy Chair, emphasized the importance of nuclear energy as Montana faces an energy transition. “Montana is at an energy crossroads,” he stated, indicating that as coal power facilities phase out, the reliance on alternative energy sources becomes critical. Electricity demand is predicted to rise by 20% in the next decade, necessitating reliable energy solutions.

Morris highlighted the potential challenges posed by the anticipated closure of the Colstrip power plant in 2042, stressing that nuclear energy can significantly contribute to affordable, carbon-free electricity, crucial for maintaining grid reliability.

Program Structure and Focus

The new curriculum will complement Montana Tech’s robust engineering programs. “This isn’t about creating a campus full of nuclear engineers,” Morris clarified. “Even a little bit of nuclear training makes students extremely attractive candidates.” Students from various engineering disciplines will have the opportunity to gain nuclear expertise, enhancing their employability.

  • Undergraduate Certificate: 9 credits
  • Master of Science Program: Both 31-credit and 36-credit options are available, depending on whether students choose to pursue a thesis.

While students will not handle nuclear materials on campus, they will engage in hands-on learning through simulations and collaborations with the Idaho National Laboratory, the U.S.’s foremost nuclear energy lab.

Availability and Application Process

Rick LaDouceur, an associate professor and director at the Center for Energy Technologies, noted that this program is tailored for those aspiring to enter the nuclear energy sector, offering pathways for professionals in STEM fields.
