Jackrabbit Volleyball to Face No. 1 Nebraska

The South Dakota State Jackrabbit volleyball team is set to host the top-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in a highly anticipated match in Brookings on Wednesday. This event marks a significant milestone for the Jackrabbits, who have transitioned from a Division II school to competing with elite teams.

Historical Context

Longtime Jackrabbit fans have witnessed the growth of the program since its move to Division I in 2004. The team first tasted success in 2007 by winning the Summit League Conference tournament and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, where they faced Nebraska. However, from 2013 to 2019, the program struggled, posting a 37-167 record, including two seasons without a conference win.

Coaching Change and Revitalization

After the 2019 season, Dan Georgalas took over as head coach, aiming to turn the program around. With a vision for a championship-level experience, he focused on instilling confidence in his players and improving the team’s culture. Under his leadership, the Jackrabbits have seen a resurgence, achieving back-to-back winning seasons in 2021 and 2022.

Despite a downturn in 2023, marked by injuries, the team’s core players remained confident, preparing for a strong comeback.

Current Season and Team Dynamics

This season, star player Sylvie Zgonc, a two-time Summit League Player of the Year, emphasized the importance of team culture and collective goals. The Jackrabbits aim to build on their recent successes as they face Nebraska.

Big Matchup Ahead

Hosting Nebraska is a monumental occasion for the Jackrabbits, a testament to their growth and ambition. Georgalas reflected on how unimaginable it would have been a few years ago to host such a prestigious program. The team aims to use this experience to bolster their performance in upcoming conference matches.

Both players and coaches understand the significance of the match in terms of preparation and motivation. While facing a tough opponent, the Jackrabbits remain focused on winning.

Community Support

The excitement is palpable in the community, with ticket sales reflecting high demand. Only a few tickets are left for tonight’s game, where fans are encouraged to wear blue to support the team.

As the Jackrabbits prepare to take on Nebraska at 7 p.m., the match represents not just a competitive challenge but a vibrant celebration of the program’s journey and aspirations for the future.
