As fall approaches, Rhode Island Energy customers are preparing for the typical electricity rate increase in October. This year, however, a new tool is launching to help customers manage their bills. Rhode Island Energy has partnered with Sense to introduce a free app that allows customers to track their electricity usage in real time.
According to Sense COO Karen Rubin, studies indicate that users of the Sense app can save between 4% and 8% on average by monitoring their consumption. The app breaks down usage by appliance, enabling users to identify potential energy savings.
Rubin elaborated that the app notifies users of their usage trends throughout the month, allowing them to adjust their habits and maintain better control over expenses. It also provides comparisons with similar homes nearby.
The partnership marks a significant advancement, made possible by the installation of smart meters, with over 500,000 installed across the state. Nicole Gooding, Rhode Island Energy’s Smart Meter Manager, noted that they are nearing completion of the smart meter rollout.
Gooding indicated that this app offers unprecedented insights into energy usage, moving beyond the traditional breakdown on customer bills. It allows for real-time monitoring, helping customers understand what drives their energy consumption and ultimately aiding them in making informed decisions.
